Science and magnetoreceptors

Birds migrate over the course of thousands of kilometers where they fly over oceans and forests. Which can be very disorienting and hard to navigate. It is believed that many birds, animals, and humans have a special cryptochrome to wear, they can read, see, or sense these magnetic fields that the earth creates. Humans have these cryptochromes but it is ensured that we can't see and sense magnetic fields. But after some studies were undertaken by scientist and showed that birds follow poles of the magnetic fields for the purpose of migration. Changing of these fields could have created birds to relocate and discover new habitats. Studies show that not just birds have this cryptochrome. Other animals like turtles, butterflies, and salamanders have this form of finding magnetic fields. I found interesting that predecessor of the animals today could have used the same technique, of navigating. And a change of these poles could have created them to become disoriented and become immune to migrating. A question I thought up could be, can you unlock this ability, or turn off. Which could have caused the finding of new animals in new environments.
